data analytic using power bi

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this practical module, learners will transition from Power BI report creators to professional publishers and collaborators. They will explore how to move reports from Power BI Desktop into the cloud-based Power BI Service, configure access controls with Role-Level Security, and share insights across the organization using dashboards, alerts, and subscriptions. Through hands-on exercises, participants will master the Power BI Service environment, enhancing their ability to drive data-driven decision-making securely and efficiently.

Designed for users who already have a foundational understanding of Power BI Desktop, this course focuses on turning great reports into actionable, widely accessible insights while maintaining governance and security.

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and utilize Power BI Workspaces to manage reports and datasets effectively.

  • Publish reports from Power BI Desktop to Power BI Service.

  • Apply Role-Level Security (RLS) to restrict report access based on user roles like region, department, or seniority level.

  • Share reports and dashboards using multiple secure options including embedded links, SharePoint integration, and scheduled subscriptions.

  • Create and manage Dashboards by pinning report visuals, setting alerts, tagging collaborators, and automating report delivery.

  • Implement best practices for secure sharing, alert configuration, and report version control.

How do I publish a report from Power BI Desktop to Power BI Service?
To publish a report, open your file in Power BI Desktop, click on the "Publish" button on the Home ribbon, sign in if prompted, and select the appropriate workspace in Power BI Service. After publishing, your report will be available online for consumption, collaboration, and sharing.
What is the purpose of Role-Level Security (RLS) in Power BI, and when should I use it?

Role-Level Security restricts access to data based on user roles, ensuring that individuals only see data relevant to their region, department, or authorization level. You should apply RLS when you want one report to serve different audiences securely without duplicating reports for each group.

Can I edit a report directly in Power BI Service after publishing it from Desktop?
Yes, you can edit reports directly in Power BI Service, but changes will affect the live version seen by others (unless you make a copy). Editing online allows you to update visuals, add pages, or change report designs without needing to republish from Desktop.
What’s the difference between a Report and a Dashboard in Power BI?
A report is a detailed collection of pages with multiple visuals, built directly from a dataset. A dashboard is a single-page summary view created by pinning visuals from one or multiple reports. Dashboards are used for quick overviews, alerts, and sharing key performance indicators (KPIs).
